Taste Test Onboarding
O V E R V I E W
At Inkling, I helped design the new iOS mobile onboarding experience, nicknamed 'Taste Test'. Taste Test allows new users of Inkling's iOS mobile app to download their choice of a small selection of free chapters, so they can dive into Inkling's rich, engaging content as quickly as possible. The older iOS app unceremoniously dropped new users into an unpopulated library (which felt a bit like entering an unknown, dark and empty apartment).
D E S I G N P R O C E S S
I began by researching a wide variety of on boarding experiences—from Evernote, Flipboard, Nook, Kobo, Amazon, Audible, and Kindle to Lyft, Spotify, and LinkedIn. I distilled this research into design principles.
I then created rough visual mocks, clickable Keynote prototypes, and animations to show to the product design team. The senior visual designer on the project integrated my work and refined it.
U S E R T E S T I N G
For user testing purposes, we created a demo using paper prototype (for functionality) and After Effects videos (for transitions). We showed this demo to 4 users in 30-45 minute sessions to answer these questions:
- Does the user understand the purpose of Taste Test?
- What is the user's emotional reaction to Taste Test?
- Does Taste Test persuade the user to download at least one free chapter?
O U T C O M E
Our interviewees enjoyed the Taste Test experience overall and found it valuable. They also showed us where we needed to make some changes.
For example, users were unclear that the free download was only one chapter from a book. They assumed that since they were clicking on a book cover, they would receive the entire book. Users also assumed that Inkling's library was limited to the 12 books that were part of Taste Test. Another finding was that even a library full of free chapters is not where users want to land; they want to see the Store page at the end of Taste Test.
This limited user testing greatly improved the onboarding experience. Going forward, the product team will incorporate these learnings in the Android version and in future iOS product cycles.
